Support Group Volunteers

What is a Support Group Volunteer?
An incredible opportunity and a huge commitment!
- Support group volunteers work with the children, teen, young adult or adult support groups at The Sharing Place.
- Each support group (there are currently 15) is lead by a grief specialist with TSP trained volunteers assisting.
- Support group volunteers meet for 3 ½ hours twice a month (this includes pre-meeting, group and post-meeting).
- Individually and together, the volunteers are what make The Sharing Place the wonderful place it is!
Currently we have 110 support group volunteers (men and women). They range in age from 18 to 65ish and have varied backgrounds interests and careers. Many of our volunteers know from experience what grief feels like, some simply want to gain a better understanding of grief, still others just like children and want to help in some significant way. Each one is valuable!
What About Training?
- Training is offered twice a year, typically in January and in August.
- Our professional highly respected staff and invited guest grief specialists present this excellent training/workshop.
- Following the 18-hour required training and review, volunteers are placed in a group according to their availability and our needs.
- We ask for a 10-month commitment. (we feel lucky that many of our volunteers stay long beyond this initial commitment)
- Advanced registration is required. A $50 non-refundable fee is required with applications.
- An additional $50 is due upon the completion of training (limited scholarships or payment plans are available upon request).
- By law, volunteers are required to provide a background check before beginning in a group.
